What is a Social Impact Assessment (SIA)?

  • A social impact assessment is a technical assessment that uses a broad range of information including local demographics, environmental assessments and publicly available reports to understand the potential impacts and benefits of a project.
  • Information from the community is also part of the assessment that helps us to understand general social values, challenges and perspectives on the project.
  • We also interview individuals, businesses, organisations and groups that can tell us about local needs and views on the project.
  • Engagement is an important part of the assessment and information is generally summarised in the report. As a result, we look for general trends and do not report detailed or personal information.
  • It is important that we collect views on broader project aspects, as well as the SIA. Alinta Energy encourages opportunities for further conversation and have supplied details of how you can provide your input below.
  • Community and Government will have the opportunity to review the SIA and provide comments. We will notify you when the SIA is published and we welcome your feedback on the social impacts, issues and management measures that we identify in the report.

Your feedback matters - even if you're not interviewed directly.

Our engagement and consultation process provides a range of ways to share your feedback:

During 2025 and 2026, we'll be:

  • undertaking environmental studies like bird surveys
  • talking with neighbours, potential transmission line hosts and the community about the project
  • submitting our approval documents for government to assess

Community and benefit sharing

We’re committed to making a positive impact in communities to create social, economic, employment, educational, and environmental opportunities and outcomes.

Guided by the Planning (Social Impact and Community Benefit) and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2025, our benefit sharing approach is all about listening to the community to meet local needs. This could include grants, sponsorships, or opportunities for education and skills development. The project is expected to bring a range of benefits, including jobs across construction, operations, and decommissioning phases; upgrades to essential services like roads and emergency response; and contributions to initiatives led by the community itself.

During the project's development phase, we’ll have community grant funding available. We’ll be promoting the program on our website, social media, in local papers and via community noticeboards.
